The Burj Khalifa , located in Downtown Dubai, United Arab Emirates , is currently the tallest building in the world , standing at a staggering height of 828 meters (2,717 feet) . It consists of 163 habitable floors along with 46 additional maintenance levels , making it a true architectural marvel. Construction of the tower began in January 2004 , and it was officially opened to the public on January 4, 2010 . The building was designed by renowned architect Adrian Smith , during his time at the firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) . It was developed by Emaar Properties , one of the largest real estate developers in the Middle East, and the main contractor for construction was Samsung C&T of South Korea. The name "Burj Khalifa" was chosen in honor of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan , the former President of the UAE, recognizing his support for the project.
